Booking Through Thursday – Database (August 11)

btt2I haven’t done one of these for a while, but this week Booking Through Thursday asks the following question:

Do you keep a database of your book collection anywhere? An online website? An excel spreadsheet? A handwritten paper journal?

This is an easy one. I use LibraryThing as a catalog for my books. It’s free up to a certain amount of books, but I’m way beyond that and took out a life membership for $25.00, which is really good value. The rest of my family use it for their books as well. My profile is HERE, so check it out if you’re interested. LibraryThing also has a mobile app, which is handy when I’m in a bookstore and am not sure whether I have a certain book or not.

I don’t use LibraryThing to track my reading. For this I use GoodReads (my profile) and 50 Book Pledge (my profile), plus I keep a list of them on this site as well. I like to keep track of my books and reading, but I sometimes have to stop myself rom getting a little obsessive!

Booking Through Thursday – Multiples (Feb 11)

btt2This week Booking Through Thursday poses the following questions:

Do you own multiple copies of any books? Why? Is it the format? Size? Just because you love it?

There are some classics that I have hard copies and e-books of, mainly because the digital copies were free. Besides these, the only books that I have a significant number of multiples of are The Bible and The Hobbit.

For The Bible it is handy, not to mention essential, to have different translations and paraphrases for my work and studies. One of my favourites would be a copy of The Living Bible that I received as a prize for being the highest boy collector in a Sunday School sponsored walk when I was 10.

As I have said many times before, The Hobbit is my favourite book of all time, so when I see unique or different additions I am often tempted to buy them. My favourite is the first copy I owned from almost 40 years ago. It’s in fairly rough shape, but I’d not want to part with it now. I can’t read it now for fear of it falling apart, but that’s what my other copies are for.

Booking Through Thursday – 2015 Favourites (Dec 31)

btt2This week Booking Through Thursday poses the following questions:

What were your favorite books of 2015? How many books did you read this year? Are you happy with the amount of reading you got done? Wish you’d had more time? (I know I always do!)

My favourite reads (in no particular order) this year were:

As I write this my reading total for the year is 69 books, with one that I might get finished later to bring the total to 70. All things considered, I’m relatively happy with the amount of books I read this year, although my target was 75. I often wish I had more time to read, but I also recognise that I could sometimes make more time. Moving into an ill-prepared house didn’t help, as most of the books I had earmarked for reading in the fall are still packed in boxes. Also, with all the house renovations going on around us there were times when I just didn’t feel like reading. On the positive side is the fact that all the renovations should be done by the end of January and I’ll be able to get all the book boxes unpacked.
