Book Beginnings and Friday 56 – The Maze Runner (July 29)

It has been forever since I did one of these Friday posts. In fact, it has been over two months since I posted anything here at all. The past few months have been quite busy with lots of people coming and going, but as things have slowed down a bit I figured it was time to get back to this again.

My choice of book this week is The Maze Runner by James Dasher. The reason I am reading this now is that the movie of this book is one of the ones on Netflix that the rest of the family want to watch. I said i’d watch it once I had read the book, so that is what I am doing now. GoodReads shares the following description:

maze runnerIf you ain’t scared, you ain’t human.

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. He’s surrounded by strangers—boys whose memories are also gone.

Nice to meet ya, shank. Welcome to the Glade.

Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze. It’s the only way out—and no one’s ever made it through alive.

Everything is going to change.

Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she delivers is terrifying.

Remember. Survive. Run.

Now for this week’s excerpts:

BB.ButtonBook Beginnings is hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader, who invites anyone to join in, saying: ‘Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.  Please remember to include the title of the book and the author. Leave a link to your post.  If you don’t have a blog, but want to participate, please leave a comment with your Book Beginning.’

The beginning of The Maze Runner:

He began his new life standing up, surrounded by cold darkness and stale, dusty air.

I don’t know very much about this book and this beginning isn’t giving away much either. Hopefully things will soon become clearer.

Friday 56The Friday 56 is a book meme hosted by Freda’s Voice and the rules are as follows:

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56.
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grabs you.
*Post it.
*Add your (url) post below in Linky. Add the post url, not your blog url.

It’s that simple.

From page 56 of The Maze Runner:

The boys lining the path to Newt and the girl glared at him as he walked past, as if he were responsible for the entire mess of the Maze and the Glade and the Grievers. Thomas refused to make eye contact with any of them, afraid of looking guilty.

I haven’t reached this part yet, so I have no idea what is going on here or even if Thomas has anything to feel guilty about. Hopefully I’ll get the book read soon so that we can watch the movie in the near future.
